I lost a big rodent account last week. Yes, I know that doesn’t sound so good, but everyone has been telling me to get away from this place for a long time. No one likes them, and the owner is on pills, and has crazy insane mood swings.
Enough about that. Ken and I have decided to open a retail store and things have been going so well. Old friends we haven’t seen in awhile have popped up to help. Clint McKnight, a good friend and college has agreed to run the store, and we have given him partial ownership. Go to face book and look up Colorado Jurassic Pets. Like it if you will. I will be posting pics on how the build out is going and hopefully we will be open in a month.
I am having a great breeding season so far, and animals have been selling before they make the website. I need to get the clutch page caught up but I’m not sure where I will find the time.
With nothing holding me back I have updated the rodent page on the website and lowered the prices. Already I am getting orders for rodents. I can ground ship into so many states that competing with the other guys has been no problem.

Easter morning was just another Sunday. I went to let the tortoises out into their yard, and then went to feed the ball pythons. With no small kids at home anymore, and the grand kids not coming over it was a quite peaceful day. I miss the days of Easter egg hunts and family dinners. But tooling around with the animals gave me peace.

Later in the afternoon I went to sit outside on the swing and have a glass of tea. I enjoy sitting and watching the tortoises wander around grazing on the grasses and weeds. But not today, Mertall was digging. Not something my tortoises do often. With precision and intent she dug a hole with her back feet pulling out dirt like a little steam shovel. When she was done she laid her eggs and proceeded to fill her hole in. Last year when she filled in her hole she made scrambled eggs out of several of her eggs so this year I pulled her away before she had filled it in all the way.

I didn’t think there was so many at first when I started to pull them out. She had dug a hole quite a bit deeper than I thought. All total there was 42 and 3 cracked ones.

My Desert / Mojave clutch

The most anticipated clutch of ours this year. The Desert / Mojave clutch was due to hatch 9-14-2010. So on Wednesday, six days early. Theresa, my number one gal around here, and I decided to take a peek. I don’t usually cut eggs early. I figure they have been coming out on there own for hundreds of years, and know when it’s the right time. But Theresa would not be back for several days and this clutch, we were both so excited about.

You should have seen us. We were sitting on the floor in the incubator room, hovered over this clutch of eggs, wanting to see what was inside. I had a scalpel in my hand, and my reading glasses on so I could see better. I picked up the first egg and made a small cut. What was it? I handed it to Theresa, and she peeked. “Mojave I think” she said. “Yes it’s a mojave” Now the next one. A Desert!! or maybe a desert mojave. Jack pot! We could not jump for joy, there wasn’t enough room. And besides we were on our hands and knees. Another Mojave and then another light one, Desert mojave again? We were so happy. When we were done there looked like four deserts or desert mojaves and two mojaves. We were so happy we could hardly contain ourselves. Plans for the future breading spun trough our heads.

The next day I checked the clutch several times. Poking at the little ones wanting to see what they were, and if they were ok. On Friday, two days after we made the little slits late in the afternoon I went in to look again. I saw one of the heads poking out. “What! No, that is not normal”. I said out loud for no one to hear but myself. I picked up the little egg and opened up the slit Theresa and I made the two day before, a bit larger. Still to my disbelief it could not be. A Spider. I took the little snake out of its egg, and sure enough it was a spider. I poked at the others ones we thought were deserts and sure enough they were spiders or maybe spider mojaves. Off the step stool I flew, and over to the phone to call Theresa. “How can that be?” exclaimed Theresa. “We only breed her to the Desert”. I reminded her she was one of Emma’s snakes. “Oh that is right” Theresa said with a sigh.

Back in mid to late April of this year, five months ago. Emma, a friend had to sell her animals. She had spent a lot of time picking the nicest ones she could find, some of them came from me and others came from friends of mine. I knew she would not sell them if she did not have any other choice so I bought them. We knew the pastel was gravid when we got her and she laid eggs two weeks later. But the Mojave had very small follicles, 15mm if I remember right. After a brief quarantine time I decided to breed the mojave female to the desert male and that is the only male I ever put in with her. In the back of my mind I knew it was possible but the follicles were small and I saw the desert locked up with her several times. I just never thought there would not be any deserts in this clutch. Goes to show you, you just never know what life will through your way.
Pics in a couple days.

After weeks of worry and a lot of sleepless nights my albino jungle boa gave birth today.

Several months ago I ultra sounded her and saw she was gravid. I also saw some unfertile follicles. There appeared to be a lot of these unfertile follicles, and this can cause a female to deliver prematurely. So I worried she might have her babies early.

Most of my boas will eat occasionally while they are gravid, but she did not. In the last month she has not been looking so good, not eating had taken a toll on her. She was getting very thin where she was not carrying the babies, and her color was getting pasty. I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking about what I could do to save her. Tube feed her a little something, give her something so she would have the babies. Take her out to move about or,,,,, I just didn’t know what I could do for her. And then there was the babies. The babies I not so long ago prayed she would not have early, I now wanted her to have early.

There are parts I have not told you yet. First I lost my male albino jungle a couple months ago from pneumonia . I didn’t know he was sick and then he was gone. Second she was bred by my IMG azabachi boa I got form Pete Kahl for $7500. Yea I was really wanting these babies. But I didn’t want to loose her either.

This morning when I woke up, being at my last straw. I figured when I was done in the rodent farm I would do something. I got a bottle of ensure and can cat food all my tub feed stuff and went in to check on her. I had just been feeding some of the animals in the other room and had a few extra live mice. I figured I would try a live mouse first, thinking something live might get her interested. Mind you she is a big boa and generally eats jumbo rats. I found the forceps and offered her the mouse. Bam, She took it, omg Thank you, thank you, I thought to myself. I looked at her coiled around the mouse and thought, She had the babies. Where are the babies?

After removing her out of the cage I found them buried under the paper in the back corner. Only 5 slugs and no dead babies yea, 9 albinos and 7 normals. I can tell which ones are IMG in the normals but not the albinos. Below are some pics.

Thanks

We are up to 74 clutches of ball pythons, 1 clutch of carpet pythons, 22 clutches of boas, not all these were good clutches but lots of babies still. Several clutches of chameleons. These take 6 months to hatch and,,, well I can screw up a lot in 6 months. I did hatch out my first fat tail gecko. He/she is so cute I will keep it for sure.

Caryn is back from her trip to Arizona. Brian had healed from his surgery and is off to California for two weeks. Lee is back from his trip river rafting. Mmm, I’m thinking I need a vacation. Theresa got in a bad motorcycle accident last week and won’t be back for a month, I’m sure. She and her hubby are ok, if you can call it ok, they are banged up and broken, but alive. She is sure she will be able to help at the show August 14th. (Fingers crossed)

Well the update in the incubator. As many of you have said “where are you going to put them all”. I reached my full point tonight in the incubator. I had to take a clutch of het albinos that were piping out and put them into a shoe box to get the last clutch in.

Well this week was a sad one. I lost a couple of my favorite boas. I took them to the vet for a necropsy so I can find out what happened.

On another note. Brian is doing better after his surgery and Caryn should be home from Arizona this weekend. I made it to the 50 clutches mark, the crazy thing is the much anticipated clutch #50 turned out to be all slugs. I haven’t had hardly any slugs this year. We have been paying close attention to the breeding. I just must have missed her “window of opportunity”. Several clutches have hatched, and I will get their pics up on the available pages soon. I have been working on the Boa pages this week.
